The Flying Dutchman
Inspired by the folklore of the ghost ship, The Flying Dutchman is a legendary burger that takes the classic cheeseburger to a new level of indulgence. Featuring two juicy beef patties layered with melted cheddar cheese, this delightful creation is perfect for those who crave bold flavors without the distraction of a bun. The simplicity of the ingredients allows the rich savoriness of the beef and cheese to shine through, making it a must-try for any burger enthusiast.
Ingredients
- Ground beef
- 1 pound (80/20 blend for optimal juiciness)
- Cheddar cheese
- 2 slices (sharp or mild, based on preference)
- Salt
- 1 teaspoon
- Black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon
- Optional toppings
- lettuce, tomato, pickles, or your favorite condiments
Instructions
- Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat.
- Divide the ground beef into two equal portions (about 1/2 pound each) and gently shape each portion into a patty, making a slight indentation in the center to prevent puffing during cooking.
- Generously season both sides of the patties with salt and black pepper.
- Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness (medium-rare to medium is recommended for best flavor).
- In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty, allowing it to melt beautifully over the beef.
- Once cooked, remove the patties from the heat and let them rest for a couple of minutes to retain their juices.
- To serve, stack one patty on top of the other, with the melted cheese in between. Optionally, add toppings like lettuce, tomato, or pickles for extra crunch and flavor.
- Enjoy the Flying Dutchman with a side of crispy fries or a fresh salad!
Tips
- For added flavor, consider mixing spices into the ground beef before forming the patties, such as garlic powder or smoked paprika.
- Experiment with different types of cheese, like pepper jack or blue cheese, for a unique twist on the classic.
- Serve with a dipping sauce like spicy ketchup or a tangy mustard for an extra kick.
