The Scofflaw

Step back into the Prohibition era with 'The Scofflaw', a classic cocktail that defies the laws of taste with its balanced, vibrant flavors. This timeless blend of rye whiskey, dry vermouth, and tart lemon juice, punctuated by the sweetness of grenadine and the subtle citrus of orange bitters, creates a drink that is both refreshing and sophisticated. It's the perfect cocktail for those seeking a taste of the rebellious spirit of the roaring 20s.

Serves 1

Ingredients

Ice cubes
as needed
Rye whiskey
2 ounces
Dry vermouth
1 ounce
Fresh lemon juice
3/4 ounce
Grenadine
3/4 ounce
Orange bitters
2 dashes
Lemon twist
1 (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
  2. Add 2 ounces of rye whiskey, 1 ounce of dry vermouth, 3/4 ounce of fresh lemon juice, 3/4 ounce of grenadine, and 2 dashes of orange bitters to the shaker.
  3. Cover the shaker and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until well-chilled.
  4. Strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe glass, making sure to prevent ice or pulp from entering the glass.
  5. Garnish with a fresh lemon twist. Simply twist it over the glass to release its oils and then drop it in.
  6. Serve immediately and enjoy the complex symphony of flavors.

Tips

  • 💡 For a twist, try substituting the rye whiskey with bourbon for a sweeter, fuller-bodied cocktail. Also, freshly squeezed lemon juice can make a significant difference in the taste compared to bottled lemon juice.
