Ingredients

Original recipe serves 6

Mutton
2 lbs, cut into pieces
Onions
2, chopped
Garlic cloves
4, minced
Tomatoes
5 large, diced
Potatoes
4 medium, peeled and diced
Chilli powder
1 teaspoon
Ground coriander
2 teaspoons
Salt
to taste
Black pepper
to taste
Water
2 cups

Instructions

  1. Heat a large pot over medium heat. Add the mutton pieces and brown on all sides, around 5-7 minutes.
  2. Add the chopped onions and minced garlic to the pot. Cook until the onions become soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Next, add the diced tomatoes, potatoes, chilli powder, coriander, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine, ensuring the mutton and vegetables are well-coated with the spices.
  4. Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer. Cook for about 2 hours, or until the mutton is tender and the flavors have melded together.
  5. Serve the Tomato Bredie hot with rice or a warm loaf of bread for a complete, satisfying meal.

Tips

  • 💡 For a more robust flavor, you can substitute half of the water with beef or vegetable broth.
  • 💡 Feel free to adjust the amount of chilli powder to your preference. If you like it spicy, add more; if you want it milder, add less.
  • 💡 Tomato Bredie is a dish that tastes even better the next day, so it's perfect for meal prep or leftovers!
