Turon (Banana Lumpia)
Turon, affectionately known as 'banana lumpia,' is a quintessential Filipino dessert that captures the essence of the tropics in every bite. Imagine ripe, sweet bananas and fragrant jackfruit, lovingly enveloped in crispy spring roll wrappers and deep-fried to a golden brown perfection. Each piece delivers a satisfying crunch, followed by a warm, gooey filling that transports you to the vibrant streets of the Philippines. Traditionally sold by street vendors and enjoyed by both young and old, turon is more than just a snack; it's a symbol of Filipino culture and hospitality, making it a delightful addition to any gathering or celebration.
Ingredients
- Ripe bananas
- 4, preferably saba or any sweet variety
- Jackfruit
- 1 cup, sliced (fresh or canned)
- Brown sugar
- 1/2 cup, plus extra for dusting
- Spring roll wrappers
- 10-12 pieces
- Cooking oil
- for deep frying (about 2 cups)
Instructions
- Peel the ripe bananas and cut them in half lengthwise to create long strips.
- On a clean, flat surface, lay out a spring roll wrapper with one corner pointing towards you.
- Place a banana half on the wrapper, followed by a few slices of jackfruit on top. Sprinkle about a teaspoon of brown sugar over the filling.
- Fold the sides of the wrapper over the filling, and then roll it up tightly from the bottom corner, tucking it in as you go.
- Moisten the top edge of the wrapper with a little water to seal it securely.
- Repeat the wrapping process with the remaining bananas, jackfruit, and wrappers until all ingredients are used.
- In a deep pan or pot, heat enough cooking oil over medium heat to submerge the turon pieces.
- Once the oil is hot, carefully place a few pieces of turon into the oil, frying them in batches. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
- Using a slotted spoon, remove the turon from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil.
- Serve the turon hot, dusted with additional brown sugar for an extra sweet touch. Enjoy this delightful treat warm, as the flavors are best when freshly made!
Tips
- For added flavor, consider adding a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the brown sugar before sprinkling it onto the filling.
- If you want to make a variation of turon, try adding a small piece of chocolate or a sprinkle of shredded coconut to the filling for a twist on the classic recipe.
- If you’re looking for a healthier version, consider baking the turon in the oven instead of frying. Brush them lightly with oil and bake at 375°F (190°C) for about 20-25 minutes, turning halfway through.
