Udon Noodles with Tangy Ponzu Sauce

Dive into the delightful world of Japanese cuisine with this Udon Noodles with Tangy Ponzu Sauce. This dish features thick, chewy udon noodles tossed in a zesty ponzu sauce that beautifully balances tartness and umami. Garnished with fresh green onions and crunchy toasted sesame seeds, this meal is both satisfying and refreshing. Udon has a rich history dating back to the Heian period, making it a beloved staple in Japanese households. Enjoy this dish as a light lunch or as a side with your favorite protein.

Ingredients

Udon noodles
12 oz (340g)
Ponzu sauce
1/4 cup (60ml)
Soy sauce
2 tablespoons (30ml)
Rice vinegar
1 tablespoon (15ml)
Mirin
1 tablespoon (15ml)
Sugar
1 teaspoon
Green onions
2, thinly sliced
Toasted sesame seeds
1 tablespoon
Optional toppings
as desired

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook the udon noodles according to the package instructions, usually about 8-10 minutes, until tender. Drain and rinse with cold water to stop the cooking process, then set aside.
  2. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the ponzu sauce, soy sauce, rice vinegar, mirin, and sugar until well combined. This sauce adds a delightful tangy flavor to the noodles.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked udon noodles and sliced green onions. Pour the ponzu sauce mixture over the noodles and toss well to ensure the noodles are evenly coated.
  4. Divide the udon noodles into serving bowls and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds. Add any optional toppings you desire, such as sliced radishes, seaweed, or even a soft-boiled egg for added richness.
  5. Serve the udon noodles with ponzu sauce immediately, garnished with additional green onions if desired. Enjoy!

Tips

  • 💡 For a heartier meal, add protein such as grilled chicken, tofu, or shrimp.
  • 💡 Feel free to adjust the sweetness of the ponzu sauce by adding more or less sugar according to your taste.
  • 💡 If you want a spicier kick, consider adding a drizzle of chili oil or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes.
