Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • Hamburger buns (4)
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • Mustard (1 tablespoon)
  • Worcestershire sauce (1 tablespoon)
  • Brown sugar (2 tablespoons)
  • Ketchup (1/2 cup)
  • Tomato sauce (1 cup)
  • Garlic (2 cloves, minced)
  • Bell pepper (1, diced)
  • Onion (1, diced)
  • Plant-based protein crumbles (2 cups)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a dash of oil.
  2. Add the diced onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Stir frequently and cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the plant-based protein crumbles to the skillet. Cook until heated through, according to package instructions.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper to create the tangy sauce.
  5. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet with the cooked vegetables and protein crumbles. Stir well to combine all ingredients.
  6. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes. This will allow the flavors to meld together.
  7. In the meantime, toast the hamburger buns if desired.
  8. Carefully spoon the vegetarian sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom half of each toasted bun.
  9. Cover with the top half of the bun and serve hot. Enjoy this hearty, flavorful dish!
