Ingredients
- Bread slices
- 4-6 slices, preferably thick-cut
- Unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons
- All-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons
- Milk
- 1 cup
- Grated cheddar cheese
- 1 cup
- Mustard powder
- 1 teaspoon
- Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon
- Salt
- 1/4 teaspoon, or to taste
- Black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon, or to taste
Instructions
- Begin by preheating your broiler to high.
- In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the all-purpose flour and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes to create a roux, which should be a light golden color.
- Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring that there are no lumps. Continue to stir until the mixture thickens and becomes smooth, about 3-5 minutes.
- Reduce the heat to low and add the grated cheddar cheese, mustard powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is creamy and well combined.
- While the cheese sauce is being prepared, toast the bread slices in a toaster or under a broiler until golden brown.
- Once toasted, place the bread slices on a baking sheet. Pour the warm cheese sauce generously over each slice.
- Transfer the baking sheet to the broiler and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese sauce is bubbly and slightly browned. Keep a close eye to prevent burning.
- Remove from the broiler and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy hot!
Tips
- For an extra kick, add a splash of hot sauce to the cheese mixture.
- You can substitute the cheddar cheese with a mix of cheeses like Gruyère or fontina for a more complex flavor.
- Serve with a side salad for a complete meal.
