Servings: 4

Ingredients

Bread slices
4-6 slices, preferably thick-cut
Unsalted butter
2 tablespoons
All-purpose flour
2 tablespoons
Milk
1 cup
Grated cheddar cheese
1 cup
Mustard powder
1 teaspoon
Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon
Salt
1/4 teaspoon, or to taste
Black pepper
1/4 teaspoon, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Begin by preheating your broiler to high.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the all-purpose flour and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes to create a roux, which should be a light golden color.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring that there are no lumps. Continue to stir until the mixture thickens and becomes smooth, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and add the grated cheddar cheese, mustard powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is creamy and well combined.
  5. While the cheese sauce is being prepared, toast the bread slices in a toaster or under a broiler until golden brown.
  6. Once toasted, place the bread slices on a baking sheet. Pour the warm cheese sauce generously over each slice.
  7. Transfer the baking sheet to the broiler and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese sauce is bubbly and slightly browned. Keep a close eye to prevent burning.
  8. Remove from the broiler and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy hot!
