Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) and lightly grease a standard loaf tin.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the wholemeal flour, plain flour, baking soda, and salt. Whisk them together to ensure even distribution and remove any lumps.
- In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk and honey until well combined, creating a harmonious blend of wet ingredients.
- Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring gently with a wooden spoon or spatula until just combined. Be cautious not to overmix; it’s perfectly fine to have a few lumps in the batter.
- Pour the batter into the prepared loaf tin, smoothing the top with a spatula if needed for an even rise.
- Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 45 minutes, or until the bread has risen, is golden brown on top, and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Once baked, remove the loaf from the oven and allow it to cool in the tin for about 5 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Slice and serve warm with butter, jam, or your favorite spread, and relish the hearty goodness.
Tips
- For a nuttier flavor, consider adding a handful of oats or seeds to the dough before baking.
- This bread pairs beautifully with a dollop of homemade apple chutney or a slice of sharp cheddar cheese.
- Store the bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days, or freeze it for longer storage.
