American Sourdough

This classic American sourdough bread is made with a tangy sourdough starter and has a chewy texture and crispy crust.

Ingredients

  • Salt (1 teaspoon)
  • Water (1 1/2 cups)
  • Bread flour (3 cups)
  • Sourdough starter (1 cup)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter, flour, and water. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  2. Cover the bowl with a damp towel and let the dough rest for 30 minutes.
  3. Add the salt to the dough and knead for 10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let the dough rise for 2-3 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 450°F.
  6. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Let the dough rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Score the top of the loaf with a sharp knife and bake for 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and crispy.
  9. Let the bread cool completely before slicing and serving.
