
American Sourdough
This classic American sourdough bread is made with a tangy sourdough starter and has a chewy texture and crispy crust.
Ingredients
- Salt (1 teaspoon)
- Water (1 1/2 cups)
- Bread flour (3 cups)
- Sourdough starter (1 cup)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter, flour, and water. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Cover the bowl with a damp towel and let the dough rest for 30 minutes.
- Add the salt to the dough and knead for 10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let the dough rise for 2-3 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 450°F.
- Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Let the dough rise for another 30 minutes.
- Score the top of the loaf with a sharp knife and bake for 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and crispy.
- Let the bread cool completely before slicing and serving.
