Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is activated.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour the yeast mixture into it. Stir with a wooden spoon or spatula until a dough begins to form.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Grease a bowl, place the dough inside, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
- While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. In a separate bowl, mix together the ground pork, soy sauce, sesame oil, chopped green onions, finely chopped carrots, salt, white pepper, and cornstarch. Ensure the mixture is well combined and set aside.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a small circle, about 4 inches in diameter.
- Place a generous spoonful of the pork filling in the center of each dough circle. Gather the edges of the dough and pinch to seal, forming a bun shape. Make sure the filling is securely enclosed.
- Arrange the buns on a steamer lined with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Cover the buns and let them rise for another 15 minutes.
- Steam the buns over high heat for 15-20 minutes, or until they are cooked through and fluffy. Ensure the steamer has enough water to avoid drying out.
- Serve the Nom Pao hot, ideally with a side of soy sauce or chili sauce for dipping. Enjoy the delightful flavors!
Tips
- For a vegetarian option, substitute the ground pork with finely chopped mushrooms or tofu.
- You can add other vegetables like bok choy or bell peppers to the filling for added flavor and texture.
- If you prefer a sweeter bun, consider adding a touch more sugar to the dough.
