Original recipe serves 6

Salt
to taste
Black Pepper
to taste
Unsalted Butter
2 tablespoons
Heavy Cream
1 cup
Parmesan Cheese
1/2 cup, grated
Gruyere Cheese
1 cup, grated
Garlic
2 cloves, minced
Onion
1 medium, finely chopped
Potatoes
4 large, thinly sliced
Swiss Chard
1 bunch, stems removed, leaves chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until they are transparent and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the chopped Swiss chard leaves to the skillet, stirring until they wilt. This should take approximately 5 minutes. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Grease a baking dish to prevent sticking. Layer half of the thinly sliced potatoes in the dish, followed by half of the Swiss chard mixture. Sprinkle half of the grated Gruyere cheese over the top.
  5. Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes, Swiss chard, and Gruyere cheese.
  6. Pour the heavy cream evenly over the layered ingredients, ensuring it seeps through the layers.
  7. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese on top. Continue baking for an additional 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese has transformed into a golden, bubbling top layer.
  9. Let the gratin cool for a few minutes before serving. This allows the creamy sauce to thicken and flavors to meld together. Enjoy!

Tips

  • 💡 For a variation, try adding cooked bacon or ham to the layers for an extra savory touch.
  • 💡 Substitute Swiss chard with spinach or kale if desired.
