Classic Bread Pudding

Indulge in this rich and comforting classic bread pudding, a delightful dessert that transforms stale bread into a warm, custardy treat. Infused with aromatic spices and plump raisins, this dish is a testament to the art of frugality in cooking. Historically, bread pudding dates back to the 13th century, when it was created as a way to use up leftover bread. It has since evolved into a beloved dessert enjoyed around the world, often served with a drizzle of cream or a scoop of ice cream for an extra touch of decadence.

Servings: 8

Ingredients

  • Stale bread (6 cups, cubed)
  • Milk (2 cups)
  • Eggs (3 large)
  • Granulated sugar (1/2 cup)
  • Vanilla extract (1 teaspoon)
  • Cinnamon (1 teaspoon)
  • Nutmeg (1/4 teaspoon)
  • Raisins (1 cup)
  • Unsalted butter (2 tablespoons, melted)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with the melted butter.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the milk, eggs, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Whisk until well combined and slightly frothy.
  4. Add the cubed stale bread and raisins to the bowl, mixing gently to ensure all the bread is soaked in the custard mixture. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to absorb the liquid.
  5. Pour the soaked bread mixture into the greased baking dish, pressing down gently to ensure even distribution.
  6. Drizzle any remaining melted butter over the top of the bread pudding.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the pudding is set in the center.
  8. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before dusting with powdered sugar.
  9. Serve warm, optionally with a drizzle of cream, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or a sprinkle of additional cinnamon.
