Servings: 9

Ingredients

All-purpose flour
2 cups
Baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons
Salt
1/2 teaspoon
Ground ginger
2 teaspoons
Ground cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons
Ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon
Unsalted butter
1/2 cup (softened)
Brown sugar
1/2 cup
Molasses
1 cup
Egg
1
Hot water
1 cup
Powdered sugar
for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a 9x9-inch baking pan by greasing it with a small amount of butter and then dusting it with flour. This will prevent the gingerbread from sticking.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, and salt. This will ensure even distribution of the spices.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  4. Gradually beat in the molasses and egg to the creamed butter and sugar mixture, ensuring each is well incorporated before adding the next.
  5. Add the dry ingredients in three parts, alternating with the hot water. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined to keep the gingerbread tender.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, smoothing the top with a spatula for even baking.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the gingerbread comes out clean.
  8. Allow the gingerbread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes to make it easier to remove. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Before serving, dust the cooled gingerbread with powdered sugar for a festive touch.
