Savory Onion Gravy
This rich and flavorful onion gravy is a timeless classic that elevates any dish. Perfectly caramelized onions meld with a luscious broth, creating a sauce that enhances the taste of roasted meats, mashed potatoes, and even vegetarian dishes. This comforting gravy has roots in traditional cooking, where every drop was cherished for its ability to bring warmth and depth to the table.
Ingredients
- Unsalted butter
- 4 tablespoons
- Onions
- 3 large, sliced
- All-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons
- Beef or vegetable broth
- 2 cups
- Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon
- Salt
- to taste
- Black pepper
- to taste
Instructions
- In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat until foamy.
- Add the sliced onions to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are deeply caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. This slow cooking process brings out the natural sweetness of the onions.
- Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the caramelized onions and stir well to coat evenly, allowing the flour to cook for about 1 minute.
- Gradually pour in the beef or vegetable broth while stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
- Add the Worcestershire sauce, along with salt and pepper to taste. Stir thoroughly to combine all ingredients.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the gravy simmer for 10 minutes, or until it thickens to your desired consistency. Stir occasionally.
- Taste the gravy and adjust the seasoning if necessary, adding more salt, pepper, or Worcestershire sauce as desired.
- Serve hot over your favorite roasted meats, mashed potatoes, or even sautéed vegetables for a delightful meal.
Tips
- For a richer flavor, substitute some of the broth with red wine or add a splash of balsamic vinegar.
- You can enhance the gravy with fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary for added depth.
- If you prefer a smoother gravy, use an immersion blender to blend the gravy to your desired consistency.
