Ingredients
- All-purpose flour (2 1/2 cups)
- Cold unsalted butter (1 cup, cubed)
- Salt (1 teaspoon)
- Cold water (6-8 tablespoons)
- Ground beef (1 pound)
- Onion (1 medium, chopped)
- Garlic (2 cloves, minced)
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
- Egg (1, beaten (for egg wash))
- Cooking oil (2 tablespoons)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the cold water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough comes together. Shape the dough into a ball, cover it with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- In a skillet, heat the cooking oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until soft and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Divide the chilled dough into two equal portions. Roll out one portion on a floured surface to fit the bottom of a greased 9-inch pie dish.
- Spread the cooked ground beef mixture evenly over the dough in the pie dish, ensuring an even layer.
- Roll out the remaining portion of dough and place it over the filling. Seal the edges by pressing them together with your fingers or a fork to prevent leakage.
- Brush the top of the Pirog with the beaten egg for a beautiful golden crust.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm and enjoy this comforting dish!
