Historically, this dish combines elements of traditional American breakfast foods, showcasing the use of locally sourced ingredients like apples and sausage, making it a wholesome and satisfying choice.

Serves 4

Ingredients

Sausage
1 pound, crumbled
Hashbrowns
4 cups, frozen or fresh
Apples
2 medium, peeled, cored, and diced
Onion
1 small, diced
Garlic
2 cloves, minced
Cheddar cheese
1 cup, shredded
Salt
to taste
Pepper
to taste
Olive oil
2 tablespoons

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the crumbled sausage and cook until browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside, leaving the drippings in the pan.
  2. In the same skillet, add the diced apples, hashbrowns, diced onion, and minced garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the hashbrowns are crispy and golden brown, and the apples and onions are softened, about 10-12 minutes.
  3. Return the cooked sausage to the skillet, stirring to combine with the hashbrown mixture. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the hash. Cover the skillet with a lid and let cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  5. Serve the hash hot, garnished with additional salt and pepper if desired. Enjoy with a side of fresh fruit or a dollop of sour cream for added creaminess.
