  • Milk (2 cups)
  • Black pepper (1/2 teaspoon)
  • Salt (1 teaspoon)
  • All-purpose flour (1/4 cup)
  • Unsalted butter (4 tablespoons)
  • Potatoes (4 large, peeled and thinly sliced)
  • Garlic powder (1/2 teaspoon (optional))
  • Onion powder (1/2 teaspoon (optional))
  • Paprika (1/4 teaspoon (for garnish))

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Stir in the flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder (if using) until well combined and smooth.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, continuing to stir constantly until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil. Remove from heat and stir in 1 1/2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
  4. In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly.
  5. Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes and sauce. Finish by topping with the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
  6. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is golden brown and bubbly.
  7. Allow the scalloped potatoes to cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with a sprinkle of paprika for added color.
