2 slices, crusts removed
White vinegar
1 tablespoon
Apricot jam
2 tablespoons
Fresh ginger
1 tablespoon, grated
Ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon
Ground coriander
1 teaspoon
Ground cumin
1 teaspoon
Turmeric
1/2 teaspoon
Curry powder
1 tablespoon
Garlic
2 cloves, minced
Onion
1 medium, chopped
Ground beef
500 grams (about 1 lb)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion becomes translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula. Drain any excess fat from the pan.
  4. In a small bowl, combine the curry powder, turmeric, ground cumin, ground coriander, ground cinnamon, and grated ginger to create a spice mixture.
  5. Stir the spice mixture, apricot jam, and white vinegar into the beef mixture, ensuring everything is well combined.
  6. Soak the bread in the milk for a few minutes, then squeeze out the excess milk and crumble the bread into the pan. Mix thoroughly.
  7. Add the raisins and slivered almonds, seasoning the mixture with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Transfer the meat mixture to a greased baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  9. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and remaining milk until smooth. Pour this egg custard over the meat mixture in the baking dish.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the custard is set and golden brown on top.
  11. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving. Bobotie is best enjoyed warm, paired with steamed rice or traditional South African bread.
