Ingredients
- Sweet potatoes
- 2 cups, peeled and cooked
- Granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup
- Unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup, melted
- Evaporated milk
- 1/2 cup
- Eggs
- 2 large
- Vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon
- Ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon
- Ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon
- Salt
- 1/4 teaspoon
- Pie crust
- 1 (9-inch) pie crust, homemade or store-bought
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into chunks. Cook them in boiling water until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and mash until smooth.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed sweet potatoes, granulated sugar, melted butter, eggs, evaporated milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix well until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
- Carefully place the pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish, pressing it firmly against the bottom and sides. If using a store-bought crust, follow the package instructions for pre-baking if necessary.
- Pour the sweet potato filling into the prepared pie crust, smoothing the top with a spatula.
- Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the filling is set and the crust is golden brown. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean.
- Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool completely on a wire rack before serving.
- Serve chilled or at room temperature. For an extra touch, consider adding a dollop of whipped cream or a sprinkle of toasted pecans on top.
Tips
- For an even richer flavor, use brown sugar instead of granulated sugar.
- Adding a touch of bourbon to the filling can enhance the depth of flavor and is a traditional Southern twist.
- If you prefer a spicier note, increase the cinnamon and nutmeg to suit your taste.
