Servings: 4
Ingredients
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- Salt (1 teaspoon, plus more for seasoning)
- Egg (1, large)
- Beer (1 cup, preferably a light lager)
- All-purpose flour (1 cup)
- Walla Walla onions (2 large, sliced into rings)
- Paprika (1/2 teaspoon (optional for extra flavor))
- Garlic powder (1/2 teaspoon (optional for extra flavor))
Instructions
- Begin by preparing the Walla Walla onions. Peel and slice the onions into 1/4-inch thick rings, separating them carefully. Set aside.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, paprika, garlic powder, beer, and egg. Whisk until the batter is smooth and free of lumps.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a large saucepan to 375°F (190°C). Ensure there is enough oil for the onion rings to float while frying.
- While the oil heats, dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing the excess to drip off. Carefully place the battered rings into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding.
- Fry the onion rings for about 4-5 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Season with additional salt while still hot, and serve immediately for the best texture.
