Authentic Indian Mango Lassi

Mango Lassi, a cherished gem in the crown of Indian cuisine, is a luscious, velvety smoothie that perfectly marries the tropical sweetness of ripe mangoes with the creamy tang of yogurt. Infused with the exotic scent of cardamom and garnished with a sprig of mint, this beverage is akin to an oasis of refreshment on a hot day. Its origins can be traced back to the Punjab region of India, where it's traditionally enjoyed as a cooling drink during the intense heat of summer. The Mango Lassi isn't just a drink, it's a mini-vacation in a glass that transports you to the sun-kissed landscapes of India with every sip.

Serves 2

Ingredients

Ripe mangoes
2, peeled and diced
Plain yogurt
1 cup
Milk
1/2 cup
Sugar
2 to 3 tablespoons, adjust as per taste
Cardamom powder
1/4 teaspoon
Ice cubes
1 cup
Fresh mint leaves
a few for garnish

Instructions

  1. Start by choosing ripe, sweet mangoes. Peel and dice them into cubes. The quality of mangoes is vital in achieving the authentic flavor of Mango Lassi.
  2. In a blender, combine the diced mangoes, plain yogurt, milk, sugar, and cardamom powder. The cardamom powder lends a unique, aromatic flavor that's characteristic to Mango Lassi.
  3. Blend the ingredients on high speed until you attain a smooth, creamy consistency.
  4. Now, add the ice cubes to the blender. Blend again until the ice is fully crushed and seamlessly blended into the lassi.
  5. Taste the Mango Lassi. Depending on the sweetness of the mangoes used, you might want to add more sugar. If needed, add sugar and blend again until well mixed.
  6. Pour the luscious Mango Lassi into serving glasses. As a finishing touch, garnish each glass with a few fresh mint leaves. The mint adds a refreshing contrast to the sweet, creamy lassi.
  7. Serve the Mango Lassi chilled. Enjoy this royal Indian treat as a soothing beverage on a sweltering day or as a decadent dessert to end a meal.

Tips

  • 💡 You can also use canned mango pulp when fresh mangoes are not in season. However, fresh mangoes give the best flavor.
  • 💡 For a vegan version, substitute the yogurt and milk with almond or coconut milk/yogurt.
  • 💡 For an added layer of flavor, you can also add a pinch of saffron strands while blending.
