This Classic Southern Peach Ice Cream is the epitome of summer decadence. Made with ripe, juicy peaches and a rich, creamy vanilla base, this homemade ice cream captures the essence of sun-kissed orchards in each spoonful. Historical context: Dating back to the 18th century, peach ice cream has been a staple dessert in the American South, particularly in Georgia, famously known as 'The Peach State'.

Servings: 8

Ingredients

Lemon juice
1 tablespoon, freshly squeezed
Vanilla extract
1 teaspoon
Whole milk
1 cup
Heavy cream
2 cups
Granulated sugar
1 cup
Ripe peaches
4 cups, peeled, pitted, and diced

Instructions

  1. Peel, pit, and dice the peaches. Set aside 2 cups for pureeing and the rest for adding to the ice cream mixture.
  2. In a blender or food processor, puree the 2 cups of diced peaches until smooth.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the pureed peaches, remaining diced peaches, sugar, heavy cream, whole milk, vanilla extract, and freshly squeezed lemon juice. Stir well to ensure all the sugar is dissolved, and the mixture is well combined.
  4. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions. This usually takes about 20-25 minutes.
  5. Once the ice cream reaches a soft-serve consistency, transfer it to a lidded container. Fold in the remaining diced peaches for added texture and peach flavor.
  6. Freeze the ice cream for at least 4 hours or until firm. Overnight freezing is recommended for the best texture.
  7. Serve the peach ice cream in bowls or cones. Enjoy this sweet treat as a delightful ending to a summer barbecue or a refreshing snack on a hot day.
