Swiss Chard and Gouda Grilled Cheese

Experience the perfect blend of earthy Swiss chard and rich, creamy Gouda cheese stuffed between two slices of golden, buttery bread. This exquisite take on the classic grilled cheese sandwich is a testament to the power of simple ingredients. Originating from the Swiss Alps, where hearty greens and robust cheese are staple foods, this sandwich is a culinary journey to the heart of Europe.

Ingredients

Salt
1/2 teaspoon, or to taste
Black pepper
1/2 teaspoon, or to taste
Garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon
Unsalted butter
4 tablespoons, divided
Bread slices
4
Gouda cheese
8 slices
Swiss chard leaves
6 large leaves, stems removed

Instructions

  1. Rinse the Swiss chard leaves thoroughly and pat dry, then remove the stems.
  2. Warm a skillet over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter until it foams.
  3. Add the Swiss chard leaves to the skillet, sautéing until they wilt, approximately 2-3 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, then remove from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Butter one side of each bread slice with the remaining butter.
  5. Lay two slices of bread in the skillet, buttered-side down. Layer each slice with 2 slices of Gouda cheese, then evenly distribute the sautéed Swiss chard, followed by another 2 slices of Gouda cheese.
  6. Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered-side up.
  7. Grill the sandwiches over medium heat until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese has melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  8. Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them rest for a minute before slicing in half.
  9. Serve immediately while hot, and enjoy the melty goodness!

Tips

  • 💡 For a crispier crust, press the sandwiches with a spatula while they're cooking.
  • 💡 Feel free to experiment with different types of bread for varied textures and flavors.
